Synopsis
TRAM route 72 was route 7 until renumbered on November 1, 1970 when operation of the Camberwell line was transferred from the Malvern depot to the Camberwell depot. The route starts outside the University of Melbourne at the corner of Swanston and Elgin streets, Carlton, and continues along Swanston St through Melbourne’s central business district. After it crosses Princes Bridge, Swanston St becomes St Kilda Rd and a vast tract of parkland is passed before the Camberwell tram turns left into Commercial Rd.
